GERMAN EVICTION
Police evicted about 10 demonstrators on August 27th from an agricultural research
field that they occupied for a week to protest genetic engineering. The government-owned
Robert Koch Institute, based in Berlin, planned to sow genetically engineered
rapeseed at the field in Lueneburg, in northern Lower Saxony state just southeast
of Hamburg. The protesters, members of the Lueneburger Association against Genetic
Technology, accused the government of pushing a risky technology over the objections
of the public.
